Working Late (2011)

Running Time: 17mins

Cast: Cal Hunter, Carleen Melaugh, Aoife Claire McLaughlin, Camilla Carina McAuley, Liza Ackermann & Tim Burden

Produced by Philip Henry

Written & Directed by Philip Henry

Synopsis: A group of office workers on a night shift begin to suspect that a killer may be in their midst.

Filmed over two days and costing less than £80, Working Late is our first foray into horror/suspense. The first day we did everything except the fight and the second day we gave over to just the action scenes. Filming went really smoothly as far as the actors were concerned, but as usual there were elements we couldn't control. We thought we were saving ourselves a lot of headaches by shooting entirely inside, so we wouldn't have to worry about the weather, right? Wrong! The two days we were shooting, the North Coast had some of the worst gales in recent history, so even though we were inside, you could still hear the wind going nuts outside. We managed to clean most of it up in post-production, but some wind noise still remains on the finished film.

Thanks again to Mark Culbertson for doing a fantastic original score for us and to Jeremy Lewis and everyone at the Riverside Theatre, Coleraine, for letting us invade their offices for two days. Thanks also to Peter Mitchell, for throwing himself down the stairs multiple times and to Julie Finlay and Neill Virtue for supplying the crash mats so Peter had something to land on. PH

Dated (2011)

Watch Dated here!

Running Time: 2mins 26secs

Cast: Cal Hunter, Julie Finlay, Neill Virtue

Produced by Philip Henry

Written & Directed by Philip Henry

Synopsis: The story of a modern girl, an old-fashioned guy, and the ex who tried to come between them.

This was made for The Virgin Media Shorts competition. We didn't win that but we did win second place at the Pigeon Field Film Festival!

Made for less than £4 (the cane was the only thing we couldn't beg or borrow - it cost £3.69) and shot in one afternoon around Portstewart. The interiors were shot in the lobby of Flowerfield Arts Centre. Julie and Neill had appeared briefly in Leaving the Lawn (at the bus stop) and it was great to have them back and give them slightly bigger roles this time. Also a big thanks to Kevin MacLeod for his wonderful (and free) music.

I'd had this idea kicking around my head for years before I finally wrote it down. It was harder than you think. You would think the shorter the film, the less work, but that's not how it works. It's really hard to give a story a beginning, middle and end in under three minutes. I think we pulled it off, though. I love this little film. PH

Leaving the Lawn (2010)

Watch the Leaving the Lawn Trailer

Running Time: 1hr 46mins

Cast: Scott Hamilton, Cal Hunter, Sarah Lennox, Neil Keery, Clodagh McHenry, Barry Etherson, Tish McGee, Liza Ackermann, Samuel Mahadeo, Robert Wilson

Produced by Lorraine Fox & Philip Henry

Written & Directed by Philip Henry

Synopsis: Tod has been lost in a haze of marijuana smoke for longer than he can remember, but when there is a dope 'drought' in town his memories slowly start to come back. Who is the girl he keeps dreaming about? He decides to walk home and find out. His journey home will not only be one of self-discovery, but also a trek from fantasy back to reality.

It's amazing that this film got made! Everything seemed to be going wrong for us for a while. Firstly, our start date was put back four months because Northern Ireland was plunged back to the ice-age at the start of 2010, then we had to shoot Sarah's scenes before she left for Canada (for a year!), Scott was busy revising and sitting his end of year exams, Cal was heading off to Boston, extras didn't show up, certain divas were unreasonable, locations fell through, but somehow, between 02/04/10 and 14/07/10 we got it all shot.

Special thanks have to go to Flowerfield Arts Centre for giving us £500 to make the movie and letting us screen the premiere and hold the press night there. We also would like to thank The Playhouse Cinema, Portrush, The Nerve Centre, Derry and The Yellow Fever Film Festival for letting us do public screenings.

And thanks to Cal Hunter (iOi), Brian Reynolds (Apathy), Mark Culbertson, Lyndsey Dollard, Julianne Shawe & Dave Frecknall (Nakatomi Towers), and Stevie Mac for supplying the music that really lifted the film.

And last but not least, thanks to everyone who participated in the film, and all the local people and businesses that supported us. We couldn't have done it without you. PH

Different (2009)

Watch Different here!

Running Time: 12mins

Cast: Lee-Anne Campbell, Jonny Johnson, Joan McLaughlin

Produced by Lorraine Fox

Written & Directed by Philip Henry

Synopsis: Alison meets a man online and goes out on a date with him, but there's more to this man than meets the eye.

This was our very first foray in film-making. It was really a dry-run for Leaving the Lawn to get us used to equipment and all the technical aspects of making a movie. It was also where I learned to use my film-editing software. The film was shot in two days (weeks apart) and was good fun. Lee-Anne, Jonny and Joan were great to work with and rarely fluffed their lines, which made my job a whole lot easier. I remember a lot of laughing. It was a fun shoot, and believe it or not, we made the whole film for £5. PH
